About Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure that involves the application of a chemical solution to remove the top layers of the skin. It removes dead skin cells and stimulates skin regeneration and collagen production. This skin rejuvenation treatment results in healthier, smoother, and younger-looking skin. Chemical peels come in three depths: light, medium, and deep.

Commonly Treated Skin Problems
  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Dark spots
  • Age spots
  • Skin discoloration
  • Scars
PREPARING FOR THE TREATMENT

Before undergoing a chemical peel, there are some procedures and routines you need to stray from to avoid unexpected outcomes after the chemical peel. Here are some things to avoid:

  • Waxing and other hair removal procedures
  • Electrolysis
  • Self-tanners
  • Abrasive scrubs
  • Exfoliants
  • Prescription and OTC topic products
  • And other major skincare agents
  • Unprotected sunlight exposure

For ideal results, professionals recommend using broad-spectrum sunscreen products for any sun time events or appointments.

Treatment Details

Before the procedure, your doctor will clean your face, protect your hair, and cover your eyes. Pain relievers and sedatives might only be needed for medium and deep chemical peels. For deep chemical peels, you will be given intravenous (IV) fluids, and your heart rate will be monitored.

Your doctor will use an applicator to apply the chemical solution to your skin. The type of acid that will be used for the treatment will depend on the type of chemical peel you are getting. Treated skin will begin to turn white (or gray for deep chemical peels). For light chemical peels, your doctor will apply a neutralizing solution or wash to remove the chemical solution from the treated skin. The stinging or burning sensation may last for up to 20 minutes.

Downtime and Recovery

Regardless of the strength of your chemical peel, your skin will be red, tight, irritated, or swollen. Strictly follow your doctor’s directions for optimal recovery. Healing of treated areas may take up to seven to 14 days, depending on the depth of the treatment.
